We'll be reading his essay "The Tightrope Walker," dedicated to his lover Abdallah Bentaga. I'm interested here in the image of the artist, and the relation to solitude, narcissism, sexuality, materiality and the role of the audience. For those that followed the Kafka seminar, this makes for a fascinating companion piece to Kafka's image of the artist (in "A Hunger Artist," "Josephine or the Mouse People," and "First Sorrow").
We will also watch the short film A Song of Love, Genet's only film (1950).
I also recommend checking out the film Man on Wire (dir. James Marsh, 2008) beforehand, to get in the mood of the art of the tightrope.

We will be asking about the past and future of communism through a reading of Groys's text, which puts a special emphasis on the philosophy of language in the understanding of communism, reconceiving its fundamental project as that of replacing economic with linguistic rationality.
