Tim Etchells (born 1962) is a Sheffield (UK) based artist who is the artistic director of Forced Entertainment, a theatre company founded in 1984. With Forced Entertainment he has directed, written, and occasionally performed in dozens of critically acclaimed performance works that have been shown at major festivals and theatres around the world. Taking a cue from their provocative name, Forced Entertainment's work is often concerned with the mechanics of the live event - disrupting conventions and expectations associated with attending a theatrical performance.
Etchells has developed his own practice as an artist outside of Forced Entertainment by authoring several books and through writing and performance projects with an ever-expanding group of artists from around the world. His books include a critical exploration of contemporary performance and theatre as well as an introduction to his work with Forced Entertainment titled Certain Fragments, a book of short stories titled Endland Stories, an ironic dream dictionary titled the Dream Dictionary for the Modern Dreamer, and a novel titled The Broken World.
