Cache intends to visualize the disintegration that usually slips through our immediate perception. It employs one materialin particular: agar agar. Agar is interesting to me because of the pace in which it alters itself. I never quite know what to expect before I arrive at the studio. Something has dried up, spilt its contents, or started moulding. This sensation I want to bring into the gallery. To create a window to observe this alteration, and see that you are part of what you see.
Artist statement
The practice of Thom van Hoek (NL) seems to be located between the physical and the virtual world, where one influences the other towards a breakdown or interruption in our sense of perception. Predominantly inspired by social geography and the virtual dimension, he investigates how we define space in relation to artificiality and disintegration.
Currently practicing a methodology in which his theoretical framework functions as inspiration for his conceptual, material process, van Hoek repositions ‘the object’ as material for an analysis or case study.
