My Black Body: A Letter Addressing Racial Concerns

My Black Body: A Letter Addressing Racial Concerns, 2018
Performance during opening night

In My Black Body: A Letter Addressing Racial Concerns (2018) she addresses institutional racism as experienced during her study in art school. The performance will be the first in a series of five in which the institution from which she is graduating will be critically addressed. In the following performances and corresponding letters, future black students of the Sandberg Institute will be addressed in their turn. In those letters, Willemsen expresses her concerns and gives concrete possibilities for emancipation. Black students are given great responsibility, and are put under real pressure to investigate and talk about racism. Willemsen seeks to shift that balance, and give responsibility to the institution instead. In order to achieve that, the institution must first listen as the initial step toward affirmative action and change.
