Katharina Sook Wilting+
“In her graduation work Mutating Patterns and Evolving Bottaris (2022), Wilting engaged the motif of knots and bundles through a lens of representation and ambiguity. They became holders for her research on pop culture’s racial and sexist narratives, and more specifically, for her investigation into “Asianfishing”—a social media phenomenon where white people appropriate Asian features for economic profit and clout, consequently reinforcing racial stereotypes. Wilting has lived through times in which the smell of kimchi from a lunchbox was deemed disgusting, as was being Asian. Now musician Ariana Grande pretends to be Asian because it’s trendy, and beauty vloggers cannot get enough of Korean skin care products and slanted eye makeup.”
