“Fluent in Arabic, English, French, Italian, and German, dabbling in Dutch, Kraitem is not interested in creating distinctions between the borders of languages, opting instead to question the relationship to hierarchical impulses that, for example, prioritize mother tongues and the “correct” modes of speaking that accompany them. Given that subjectivity—the fashioning of the “I,” as Robertson puts—is based in self-definition, it makes sense that Kraitem defines for herself what tongue works and when.
