Curator, researcher, and filmmaker. Since 2014 he has been leading syg.ma – a community-run platform and an archive of texts on society and art. It serves as an engine for launching collaborative projects mapping an international community of writers, activists, and artists. As a filmmaker and a researcher, he investigates the transient geographies and overlapping cultures of Central Eurasia.
As a researcher, filmmaker, and publisher, Furqat Palvan-Zade is interested in the transient geographies and overlapping cultures of Central Eurasia. Currently, he is working on a film investigating a Persian manuscript called The Ball and the Polo Stick, or the Book of Ecstasy.
Polo – which these days is considered to be primarily a form of entertainment for rich white people – serves as a metaphor for the colonial history of Central Eurasia. The film does not only decolonize the game, but also tells the stories of violent wars in the region. The kaleidoscope of truths that are kept in this manuscript challenges the idea that history and reality are static or settled. It reminds us that the past is even less predictable than the future.
The future film will be presented as a collage of found footage and material filmed by Furqat in Azerbaijan and Russia.
