biography
Julina Vanille Bezold is a body designer & visual artist working in costume design, body architecture, performance & biodesign. In her work, she explores human & planetary consciousness beyond scientific rationalism that opened her gaze to mysticism & spirituality, incorporating methodologies of pleasure activism, design for wellbeing, coexistence & sensitivity. During Sandberg, she researched design for the post-natural Anthropocene.
The House and The Wise
The House and The Wise is a spatial fluid-symbiotic body-tree sculpture, inviting into an intimate experience of self-dedication. The word ‘human’ comes from the Latin word ‘humus’, meaning earth or soil. We are earth that has come to consciousness. In the universal archetype of the ‘Axis Mundi’, the human condition is connected to the physical and transcendental universe through the image of a plant. Its roots reach down through the terrestrial into darkness, whilst its branches stretch up to the celestial, the cosmos. Further, this image is a symbol of consciousness and subconsciousness displayed in the principle ‘as above, so below’, revealing that our inner world is resembling and connected to our environment. Herbs, self-grown bacteria, and horse leather are made into objects accommodating the body, creating a home in itself. They can be refuge, confrontation, relief, welcoming the participants into a realm of self-embodied sensory perception. Under an organic bubble, there is space for levitation, space to bypass the cognitive realm and to transcend the hows and the whys. In rotation, the participants become the work by their forms of being. Although pharmaceutical technocracy assumes that corporeal and mental health is unachievable without synthetic medicine, our cells demonstrably understand the information of plants much better as they resemble us in their components. Human health and plant medicine were intertwined for thousands of years. As what is around our bodies is inside of it too, the visitor is invited to take in a herbal kombucha sphere, that coevolved with the bacteria leather. Considering not only extraction from the plant world for human use, vegetal ontology also requires us to expand our respect for modes of being, acknowledging that these might go beyond what we can grasp as ‘knowledge‘ or ‘intelligence‘.
