Mutating Patterns and evolving Bottaris
How much are we allowed to appropriate when it comes to our Identity? The work “Mutating Patterns and Evolving Bottaris” reflects on the Social Media phenomenon called “Asianfishing” where white people appropriate Asian features for economic profit and consequently reinforce racial stereotypes. While textile and pattern making serves as a canvas to talk about this type of cultural appropriation, the exhibited pattern consists of a fictional world in which mutated self-portraits and associative “stereotypical” Asian elements and symbols are layered on top of each other. This creates a tension within the installation, since the evolution of textile is streaked with stories of creative innovation to theft and extortion. The patterned textiles are wrapped and tied around undefinable objects while being connected within their placement through knots. The knots – reversible at any moment – suggest fluidity, stability and (inter)connection. By using the technique of a Bottari – a fabric bundle which originates from Korea – Katharina Sook Wilting is trying to understand what the knot holds. Maybe it could reveal what was once concealed– a story.
