Rasha Dakkak is a designer, researcher, and educator from Palestine, living between Abu Dhabi and Amsterdam. Her most recent research investigates the probable intersection(s) between publishing and learning. Dakkak founded Bayn, a platform devoted to writing and learning about design from the Arabic-speaking world. She is a co-curator of "Language Cafe," a discussion forum about language, semantics, and translation.
Bayn -Arabic for "in-between"- is a platform committed to writing, researching, and learning about design from the Arabic-speaking world. It emerged from a yearning to reimagine the design discourse I was familiar with, which had given me a sense of distance and exclusion. That was due to its underrepresentation of specific histories and figures, a lack of critical writing, and an absence of an accessible theoretical framework for design in Arabic, my mother tongue.
Bayn forms a circle at the graduation exhibition. The phrase "English is a minor language," written in Arabic, welcomes the viewer. It declares English to be so and adheres to Bayn's first issue's design layout, which puts English in the background and Arabic in the foreground, taking the viewer to an alternate reality in which linguistic imperialism has been demolished.
The second element in the space is copies of the printed journal.
In addition to the sentence, the learning circle is constructed by two Bayn texts, placing them within a cloud of knowledge and weaving their content with other writings, works, objects, and so on, allowing for multiple readings to narrate a possible design history.
Through activating the learning circle, methods for learning and exchanging knowledge are tested in the work.
Bayn's intention in rethinking a practice capable of reconciling with the intricacies of history, connecting existing knowledge(s), aiding in better situating the self, and developing an ecosystem that supports current discourse is represented by the learning circle and its components.
