Anna Celda+
biography
Anna Celda is a cook, storyteller and graphic designer based in Amsterdam. Her work brings together publishing, cooking, care giving, designing... Cooking in the canteen of the Rietveld Academy, for her friends and community or in the anarchist restaurant La Mandràgora in her hometown of València, her kitchens becomes the melting point where stories, time, people and ingredients meet.
Zona Zero
A mortar and a pestle. A vessel and a weapon. A tool made of wood. What does it sound like? A mother cooking in the kitchen, the neighbours come around for a bit of company. Below the rhythmic pum pum pum pum of the mortar, you hear them softly chatting. The wood of the mortar inadvertently absorbs the sounds it hears, the movements it feels, the food it touches. The pestle holds the memory of the hands that have held it, each of them imprinting themselves through stains on the material. Now all these feelings echo back to you. Zona Zero explores a kitchen, the tools inside it, and the knowledge they embody. The result is a tactile wooden installation with layers of sound playing through it. A familiar smell brings you in, and as you lean into the wood to investigate further, you hear whispers of gossip. An invitation is extended to you: to use the tool, just as I would, by grinding garlic and salt together within the vessel. A set of instructions will guide you. The carefully choreographed movements you perform are amplified, echoing around the space.
