“Ab wann wird” is a collective work realised at the Trotz-Collective residency in Schrems, Lower Austria. It raises questions on the limits of what can be considered craft. The german word Handwerk literally translates to the work of the hands. Within the global and industrial systems that make up our lived realities, it is worth asking if the definition of Handwerk should be reconsidered to include non-manual knowledge and tools in a broader sense; e.g. automatic looms and the human capacity to feel or hear if a machine is running smoothly. Is it fair to revoke the lable of Handwerk/craft from human-machine processes and products that exceed our historic understanding of manual production?
