Julian Schubert is part of the collective, independent, undisciplinary spatial practice Something Fantastic which he founded with his colleagues Elena Schütz and Leonard Streich after their architectural studies at UdK Berlin and ETH Zurich in 2012. The firm’s agenda is based on the idea that architecture is affected by everything and vice versa – does affect everything – and therefore working as architects implies a broad interest and involvement in the world. The studio operates in the extended field of the discipline, aiming to combine a strive for beauty and novelty with ecological, social and political responsibility. From 2013 to 2019 the three partners taught the Master of Advanced Studies in Urban Design at ETH Zurich with a focus on informal and rapidly developing urban contexts. Other research and educational projects include a guest professorship at Peter Behrens School of Architecture in Dusseldorf, and institutional collaborations e.g. with Harvard University and Yokohama GSA. Something Fantastic’s work has been part of Architectural Biennales in Sao Paulo, Venice and Shenzhen as well as exhibitions in museums as the Museo de Arte do Rio (MAR) and the Museum of Modern Art New York (MoMA) as well as in galleries such as Valerie Traan in Antwerp or Nolan Judin in Berlin.
