Maria Barnas (Hoorn, 1973) is a Dutch poet, novelist, and visual artist whose work circles around the alchemy of language — its power, its limits, and the curious ways in which words shape our grasp of reality. Blending poetry, visual art, and essayistic reflection, Barnas creates an interdisciplinary practice where language is not merely a vehicle for expression but offers a context for exploring political implications.Through poems and installations, she gives form to pressing themes such as power, control, censorship, and the fragile borders of freedom. Her work poses questions that echo loudly in today’s world: Who is allowed to speak? How is meaning made? And what happens when language is put in service of systems and authority? Using fragmentation, spatial interventions, and mirrored perspectives, she carves out space for alternative views — offering a poetic resistance to dominant narratives.Barnas regularly contributes to De Gids (where she is also an editor)and NRC Handelsblad, and her work has been shown in institutions including the Kröller-Müller Museum. A member of the Akademie van Kunsten, she has received several literary awards, including the C. Buddingh ’Prize, the J.C. Bloem Prize, and the Anna BijnsPrize.
