'this is an opening / otherwise, she writes' is an experimental video essay, figured as an extension of gervaise alexis savvias' ongoing attempt to trace the spectre of their grandmother, explore the (im)possibilities of blackness, and critique the totalising regime of linear time. By staging a conversation between their grandmother's aversion to being photographed, her uncovered manuscripts, and an experimental sonic score produced by Andreas Yakovlev Michaelides, the film explores the non-linearity of time, absence, hauntology, and the mysticism of the chance encounter.
