Un solo dos solos is composed of a series of videos in which various professional musicians mentally perform a score which has been created exclusively for internal interpretation—or listening. While the score employs elements of classical musical notation, it is not intended to be heard. It has not been composed through external sound, nor can it be performed to produce physical sound. Instead, the score focuses on the mental experience of sound and engages with internal soundscapes. Through the videos, a series of subtle bodily gestures become perceptible: vibrations of the vocal cords, pauses, muscular tensions, intensities, breathing patterns, rhythmic variations, facial expressions, and some strategies of group synchronization.
The piece moves away from the theatricalization of musical meaning. It is not about performing or acting, but about creating the conditions for the natural, unembellished bodily expression of those interpreting it. Through the act of recalling the score, the performers’ bodies reveal the musicians’ capacity to internally hear the multiple elements that constitute the complexity of a sonic composition. The main gallery space is conceived as an antechamber. The short passage which goes from the entrance to the back room, where the videos are presented, prepares the viewer’s attention for their viewing.
Along this path, a gap has been opened in the ceiling, directing the gaze beyond the walls of the exhibition space. This opening invites the viewer to look outward and observe what unfolds outside: the life surrounding the gallery—from the stars that appear at night to the windows of neighbouring buildings or the airplane trails crossing the sky.
A black dot can be seen from different locations throughout the neighbourhood where the gallery is situated. As in the piece Atlas, the work is not intended to be observed by any particular person or from any specific viewpoint. By displacing the centrality of vision, it points towards a location outside the usual frame of sight while remaining visible to everyone.
The work directs the gaze upward, suggesting that by tilting our heads we may also shift our understanding of the surrounding world. We are the gesture. A vertical movement is activated, blurring the space around us—an axis between the sky and the earth that holds the point aloft, a vanishing point that pierces the ceiling and extends beyond, into the celestial dome.
