Biography
Matteo Rattini (2001 IT) lives and works between Amsterdam and Venice. He holds a BA in Multimedia Arts from IUAV Venice, awarded with Honours. Since 2021, he has been a member of the editorial collective Ipercubo, and in 2024, he performed in Massimo Bartolini's Due Qui/To Hear for the Italian Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale. He has taken part in residencies at the Fondazione Antonio Ratti (Artist's Research Laboratory directed by Hilary Lloyd), and ArchivorumARK in collaboration with Galleria Continua, the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, the Fondazione Cini with the Factum Foundation, the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, and MAC Studi d'Artista.
Matteo Rattini's work sits at the intersection of the virtual and the real, where images become reality, and the concrete dematerialises. He uses "virtual" to refer to what opposes material existence: the digital, the imaginary, the false and the counterfeit, set against everything considered true and therefore real. His practice focuses on the ambiguous zone where these dimensions meet, in which devices, technologies, and abstract structures mediate between interiority and exteriority, shaping our perception of reality and, ultimately, reality itself. Working within a contemporary landscape where expression is increasingly appropriated and commodified, he approaches expression itself with distrust, treating it as a field that reveals the homogenising effects of globalised culture rather than a tool of differentiation. Reproduction, falsification, accumulation, and seriality function in his work as alternative modes of production, turning expression into a facade or cliché whose meaning operates unexpectedly as a critical tool of inquiry.
